Folks keep telling me I should metal detect in graveyards. I tried a small graveyard yesterday and found nothing. Has anyone found anything worthy of keeping from a graveyard? I still think its kind of weird...
The same day that I retire I intend to purchase a metal detector and hit the beach. I doubt I will ever use it in a graveyard out of respect for the dead. Way too creepy for me!
I've never even used a metal detector, but if I did, I would never think of violating the sanctity of the dead. I really don't think too much of those who do. There are plenty of other places that can be searched. Maybe they should try searching in the Marianas Trench or Pinataubo or Chernobyl or some place like them. Chris
Where I searched was the small parking area and the pathway to the yard. The traveled areas, it would do know good to search the gravesites since the earth has been moved around. I agree, I'm not to thrilled about the idea either, but I did try it even though its weird...
I'd have to think that's a big no no... Heck it might even be illegal in a couple of different ways... even if your not in the area of the graves.
Iam not sure what you could find in a graveyard that would be of value? Sounds a little morbid to me!
I thought everyone would say this, but what I can't figure is why so many people in my area would recommend this. This place is pretty strange though...
I have, and didn't find much. It was an old Revolutionary War graveyard. One where the neighbors & I kept it clean because kids would toss trash there. If there is something that you find not right-- consider the trash that others throw there, not those of us who remove the trash.
If they let you, why not. I don't think you'd dig deep enough to find a body. How deep can metal detectors reach?
Its not a body thats the issue. there are many people that will bury something near their loved ones just to say "I was thinking of you". I know a scout master and former marine in my area that if you were to detect anywhere near his site you would find many scout pins, challenge coins, and even a few eagle scout badges that were buried there out of respect for a great man. Would it be right to dig those up?
In the 18th and 19th century it was often common practice for families to go to the graveyards for picnics with the family (all of them). Well you sit around or lay on the ground you are likely to lose coins.
This is basically what I was thinking of, some may think of it as grave robbing or whatever, but I'm just looking for lost change...
This does not sound like a good idea to me....... Hey Joe, let's go put some flowers on great grandma's grave since she would have been 200 today. Wait, why is that guy digging up the grass by her grave? Is he trying to steal her gold teeth? That's OK Marge, I've got my shotgun with me. I'm going to teach that poacher a lesson!!! Either that or it is just too creepy
