Messed up 1980 cent

    I run across this one and at first glance though I had something only to see that it looks like someone mashed a couple of pennies together. When I looked closer I saw near the top of the obverse what looks like what may be a mint error on this messed up coin. It appears to be U S T in the rim. Maybe just more damage by the masher!

    I think you have it right - two coins pressed together caused it IMO.

    If it had been a die clash, the lettering would have been raised, not incused.

    That's not correct. A die clash produces letters that are incuse and mirror-image. Clash marks are generally confined to the field and the lowest-lying areas of the design. A "sanwich job" shows incuse, mirror-image design elements on the highest points of the design.

    as soon as I saw you respond mike, I knew I had it backwards...DOH.


    So as to my previous statement "strike that, reverse it"....LOL
