Merc '45 S vs. Micro S ?

    IS there a reference to determine which is which?

    Cherry pickers show two styles. A micro s as well as an common know tail s. From your image it to me looks like the micro s as it has the same die break as well as a die chip to the upper west of the s

    SO how much of a premium (over melt)? It has been cleaned, I do believe...

    Still looks like VF-30+

    At one time, many years ago, they were usually 10-30% premium. Then it was discovered that many -if not most- were sent to banks in southern Calif. At a show in San Diego about 20 years ago I bought a whole roll of micro-S for plain merc. price from a dealer that claimed he had acquired and sold 3 full bags in the early 50s.
