I was searching for the "old man coin" from pawn stars an came across an item that is used for melting coins/silver. It comes with everything you need except for a butane torch and a thing to make the shape of the melted silver. My question is, what else would you need to meltt scrap silver coins down and make them into 1oz bars and have the stamp for 1oz/ .999 fine silver?

Honestly, I don't think it is a good idea to smelt your metal down. People don't trust garage made bars of precious metals.

Isn't it illegal to melt coins?

Not if the coin is no longer in production.

You're right. I think almost every coin meant for circulation is an alloy of silver and something else. The most silver content coin I have is 0.900 silver. Most are inbetween 0.72 and 0.9.

If you want to mess around with melting silver, buy silver jeweler wire from Amazon. Silver wire is way cheaper than silver, oddly enough.

There are chemicals added while melting the silver wich remove the lmpurities. However if you decide to melt silver, please spare the coins. Why not buy scrap jewelery? I mess around with this stuff a bit. Feel free to pm me if you need any pointers.

Dennis! Long time no talk, the kit had something that removed the things in coins to make it .999 i think. I wasnt sure i was going to melt anything. I was just wondering how to do it and what you would need. And the scrap jewelry/ silver wire sounds interesting.

Yeah, buy the wire. It already comes at 0.999 and its almost at cost. I blocked myself from Amazon to prevent me buying things but I remember it being sold at about spot. Its really quite shocking, I would have never thought that silver wire would be one of the cheapest way to buy silver, but it is what ShireSilver and other small-time silver dudes buy to make silver products. (Plus, the wire is easier to melt due to its large surface area and thinness)

Here at http://www.riogrande.com/Product/999-Fine-Silver-1-8-Plain-Strip-26-Ga-Dead-Soft/101003 it is $34.03 per troy ounce. Definitely do amazon though.
SilverTowne sells 1 oz troy silver for $31.10 with free shipping
    Spot is like 28.75 today.

If you watch on eBay you can usually get some scrap silver pretty cheap. You can sometimes buy it for about 75% of spot.

I'm .999 percent certain that anything you melt using this kit, will not be "fine" silver.
