Hello All. Meow is still on the hunt daily pawing a penny rolls hard. Meow has quite a few interesting finds over the last few months but has been feeling very unmotivated to post much. Maybe one day Meow will post the backlog. But anyway, Meow recently found a penny with Mechanical tripling. Meow knows 1970s has fairly plentiful MD examples but this is the first MT Meow has ever noticed. Meow also has a 1969s that kinda looks like a s/s. But Meow is not sure as maybe an extreme form of MD on that as the first 9 looks odd too. And finally, a not too hard to find but always fun to find 50s die chips. This 1954s has a tadpole for a 9. Well Meow... The 1970S is cool because the machine doubling happened with a couple of chatters, which gives the triple effect... unfortunately it is machine doubling. The 1969S is a good example of localized machine doubling. The S and the 9 show it, as you mention. You can tell that this is not true doubling because there are no split serifs... it just looks "smudged". Additionally, at this period of time, the mintmark was applied separately - if the date was doubled, the mintmark wouldn't be. If the mintmark was repunched, the date would be fine. The fact that both of them show the same distortion instantly proves machine doubling. As for the 54S... chips in the 9 are incredibly common across most dates of Lincolns. This is an interesting feature, but that coin, especially in that condition, is not worth a premium.
