I'm thinking of sending these off to NGC - can you guess the grade beforehand? Thanks in advance! + 1942 (1949) Ireland Mint Set This set was an interesting acquisition... Ireland's Mint apparently randomly distributed the years for the 1940's sets. All of the silvers are from 1942, while the lower denominations are all from 1949. It's also strange that despite the much lower mintage of the 1949 set of about 3-4 times less than the 1942 mintage, some of the 1942 counterparts are valued more. Perhaps WWII had something to do with those coins - maybe they were melted down, sent / sold off as a huge hoard, etc. Anyway, I'll submit the ones that I'll at least break even on the cost of submission. This will entirely depend on the grade. What would you grade them as, and any idea on value? And, too bad NGC doesn't put sets into one large slab anymore - I would have wanted that. By the way, all of the coins have full cartwheel luster like this one directly below. The direct shots were more blurry but show the cartwheel luster, whereas the angled shots seem to have a matte appearance but shows the full range of colors seen in real life. I believe it has to do with the lighting but I'm still working on my photography skills... Thanks in advance! 1942 Half Crown 1942 Florin 1942 Shilling ("+" for eye appeal?) 1949 Sixpence 1949 Threepence 1949 Penny 1949 Half Penny 1949 Quarter Penny + 1966 Irish Uprising I actually prefer the matte appearance of the dark gray tarnish over the proof example, even though I usually go for the proof strike coins in general. The coin looks much darker in-person, even darker than the angled photo, with a rich patina to it.
Some more pics, direct shots. They're blurry but it's a bit better at showing the cartwheel luster. Angled '66 Irish Uprising
The answers ARE: 1/2d: 65 1942 1/2 C: 63 1942 Florin: Bodybag (Env. Damage) 1942 Shilling: 66 1949 Sixpence: 65 1949 Threepence: 65 1949 Penny: 64 RB 1949 Half and 1/4 Penny: 64 Irish Uprising: AU55
Going by this, I'll submit all of them minus the Irish Uprising. For the 1942 Florin, maybe they'll ask me if I want it conserved. I'm going to have to put a note with my submission saying that if any of these Irish coins will get a Details grade, then I'd want them to be conserved. Maybe it'll still be a Details grade but it may get a higher grade as a result. Thanks!
Just guesses 1/2 Crown - 63 florin - 62 shilling - 65 6pence - 66 3pence - 64 penny - 64 1/2 penny - 64 1/4 penny - 64
Well, here they are below. I thought the 1S was relatively better than the 1/2C, but some of the others are a pleasant surprise. Irish coins seem relatively uncommon, given the aggregate and grade pop count. Year Denom: Grade (Pop # in Grade) 1942 1/2C: MS65 (Pop 32) 1942 2S : MS64 (Pop 19) 1942 1S : MS65 (Pop 30) 1949 6P : MS66 (Top Pop 1 of 5!) 1949 3P : MS66 (Top Pop, 1 of 2!) 1949 Penny: MS63 RB (Pop 4) 1949 1/2P : MS65 RB (Pop 3) 1949 1/4P : MS65 RD (Top Pop, 1 of 6!)
