Hello, I am somewhat new to coin collecting, and am trying to put together an au to ms peace dollar set. However I will buy bargains on ebay of any denomination. I picked up a couple of rolls of merc dimes and came across a 1942s that appears to have a variation around the 2 on 1942. I know that there isn't a 1942/1 listed in the books for the s mint but it didnt look like the other 1942's I have accumulated. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi bigred.

    Welcome!
There are a couple of different 1942-S dime die varieties that have differing degrees of doubling on the date, that I am aware of.
It's impossible to tell you anything about your coin, sinse we can't see a clear close-up of the date area, but I would still like to wish you good luck with your coin collecting.

If you are asking about what looks like a closed loop at the top of the 2 - I would hazard a guess that it is the result of a die chip. I don't really see anything else based on the pic.

Yes, that is the part I was questioning. It just looked different than the other 1942 dimes I had.

I'm not much on varieties and errors - know very little about them. But there are many collectors who know a great deal and get all excited every time they see one.

Now I don't know if that particular coin would stir any interest - but it might. Who knows - it might even qualify as a new variety. You might want to check out CONECA
