Picked up this little bronze RPC with a few others last week to give as gifts for my students, for ten dollars each. It was attributed as an Antoninus Pius from Tyana. But I think it is this very rare Cilicia/Anazarbas issue. One of three known? Could this be correct? coinboughtapiusnotsureobv.jpg coinboughtapiusnotsurereverse.jpg This is what the seller called it:"NICE ANTONIUS PIUS AE21 TYANA Ancient bronze Roman coin. It measures 21 MM and weighs 7.81".
This is what I figure it might be according to acsearch and Wildwinds:
Acsearch: CILICIA, Anazarbus. Antoninus Pius. 138-161 AD. Æ 22mm (6.15 gm). Dated year 179 (160/161 AD). Radiate head right / Tyche seated left on rocks, holding ear of grain; river-god Pyramos swimming left below. SNG Levante 1388 = Zeigler 143.1 (Vs 3 / Rs 8 - this coin); SNG France-; SNG von Aulock -. Near VF, dark gray patina, rough. Very rare, only two specimens from two different die combinations cited by Zeigler. [IMG]

Here is the closest match of what it was listed as from Tyana, that I pulled from wild winds. And as you can see your coin matches the very rare Anazarbas and not the Tyana. Way to go! What a score _tyana_BMC_04.jpg

Thanks for adding that Ryro- that clarifies the mis-attribution. It was the two letters under either side of the bust that was the key to figure what it was amongst all the many on acsearch. I guess people are cleaning up coins and not having the expertise enough to identify what they really are before they turn them around in the market.

Lucky is right. I also got this wild coin in the same little group for a few bucks. The seller did not seem to know that the reverse was of a famous volcano- Mt.Argeaus and so the pinkish red patina makes it kinda spectacular with a lava flow due to centuries of chemical reactions.
"REALLY NICE COIN with an AWESOME Reverse Side. Cappadocia Caesarea SEVERUS ALEXANDER AE coin. Minted between 222&235 A.D. It measures 24 MM and weighs 10.06 Grams Gauranteed Authentic Ancient Coin coinboughtseveruspatinamountarguesobv.jpg " coinboughtsveruspatinarevargues.jpg
