Picked this up a few night ago from a trusted friend. Only my second late Roman silver coin, but it's nice. Magnus Maximus. 383-388 AD. AR Siliqua (19mm, 1.98g) Obv. D N MAG MAX-IMVS P F AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Rev. VIRTVS RO-MANORVM, Roma enthroned facing, head left, holding globus and scepter; TRPS . RIC IX, pg 29, #84b. VF, nicely toned.
VERY NICE! I do not collect Late Roman, but your example is great! There are a bunch of great collectors here that focus on this Era...
Fabulous coin, and no evidence of the clipping that's so common on siliquae of MM. Great color also - please don't dip it.
I don't have Mag Max in silver, but I do have a siliqua of another ruler that usurped the throne. Jovinus, Western Roman Empire AR siliqua Obv: D N IOVIN-VS PF AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right Rev: VICTOR-IA AVGG, Roma seated left on stylized cuirass, holding Victory on globe and reversed spear Mint: Lugdunum (Mintmark: SMLDV); struck 411-413 AD Ref: RIC X 1716
Wow, Jovinus is a difficult emperor to capture, let alone a Siliqua from his reign. Nice capture VK...
Wow, that's a very sweet OP-addition, Mr Wolf (great coin) Sadly, I don't have an example of Mag-Max (*sigh*) Hey, what ever happened to Mag-Max? (the CT member) ... we haven't heard from him in months, eh?
Not sure, but I think he was upset about something (or maybe I'm thinking of someone else - I am gettin' old ya know?).
Oh, maybe? ... I don't recall any drama (maybe that hothead, Oki, pissed him off?) ... just jokes, my Hadrian lovin' friend
He took offense at some comments and left. I had PM's with him and tried to convince him to stay. In any group of people, some are going to rub each other the wrong way. Hell, if only two people were left on the planet, they'd eventually get into an argument. But he was adamant - I liked him immensely and he made important contributions to the forum. I wish he hadn't done that.
