Another MIID thread appeared just before I was going to add this thread. I have saved most of my M II D coins, which are from Alexandria for this thread.

I have been adding a few Alexandrian M II D coins to my pile recently and thought it worth sharing them as they are so far. I am far from having one from each group but I have enough to illustrate what was going on at Alexandria.

    GENIO CAESARIS

The early output of M II D are produced with his elevation to Caesar. This first coin is from the second output in his name following on from a scarce issue (RIC 64) from early A.D. 308 where the marks are A | _ // ALE or _ | A // ALE.

The bust here doesn't appear to have become the fully stylised version of later issues. This particular issue is one that I also find a bit puzzling. The arrangement of the mintmarks is normaly very rigid. RIC notes these as being P | A-E / R // ALE but in the footnote gives other possible arrangements of the mintmarks such as P / A | R, A / P | R and P | R / A.

    Maximinus II - Follis

Obv:– GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB CAES, Laureate head right
Rev:– GENIO CAESARIS, Genius standing left, modius on head, naked but for chlamys at waist, left hand holding cornucopiae and right hand holding patera
    Minted in Alexandria (P / D | R // ALE). Dated to Mid A.D. 308
    Reference(s) – RIC VI Alexandria 71 (Common)

Later in A.D. 308 there is another issue (RIC 78) with the marks X | A-S / K // ALE. Again this issue has a wide array of mintmark arrangements.

The next issue shows the more stylised portrait. RIC allocates different entries RIC 99a and RIC 100a based on the depiction of the wreath ties.

    Maximinus II - Follis

Obv:– GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB CAES, Laureate head right
Rev:– GENIO CAESARIS, Genius standing left, modius on head, naked but for chlamys at waist, left hand holding cornucopiae and right hand holding patera
    Minted in Alexandria (K | S / P // ALE). Late A.D. 308 - A.D. 310
    Reference(s) – RIC VI Alexandria 99a (Common)

    GENIO IMPERATORIS

There are three issues that share the mintmark K | A-S / P // ALE of M II D that are seaparated chronologically by RIC by the depiction of their wreath ties. RIC 103 - divergent ties, RIC 105c - parallel wreath ties with pointed ends and RIC 107c - parallel wreath ties with rounded ends.

    Maximinus II - Follis

Obv:– IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG, Laureate head right (parallel wreath ties with rounded ends)
Rev:– GENIO IMPERATORIS, Genius standing left, modius on head, naked but for chlamys at waist, left hand holding cornucopiae and right hand holding patera
    Minted in Alexandria (K | S / P // ALE). Late A.D. 308 - A.D. 310
    Reference(s) – RIC VI Alexandria 107c (Common)

    There is a scarce issue with * / K | Gamma / P // ALE dated later in A.D. 310.

All this precedes the death of Galerius. Following the death of Galerius there are the last two issues of the Genius sacrificing reverse type.

There is a final GENIO IMPERATORIS with Crescent / K | Gamma / P // ALE which is dated to A.D. 311. Alongside this is the introduction of the BONO GENIO PII IMPERATORIS reverse legend with the same mintmarks.

This is followed by the last of the type.

    Maximinus II Daia - Follis

Obv:– IMP C GALER VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG, Laureate head right
Rev:– BONO GENIO PII IMPERATORIS, Genius, naked but for chlamys fastened at his right shoulder and hanging from his left shoulder, standing facing, head left, wearing modius, holding patera in right hand and ornate cornucopia in left arm behind
    Minted in Alexandria (Crescent / K | Gamma / X // ALE). A.D. 311 - A.D. 312
Reference(s) – RIC VI Alexandria 144b (Rated Common)

We are now in A.D. 312 and the introduction of GENIO AVGVSTI reverse legend, which have the holding head of Serapis type.

These coins have been arranged chronologically by RIC using their mintmarks. The first issue (RIC 149b) has mintmarks X | A-G // ALE. Followed by (RIC 152b) Crescent / X | A-G // ALE.

Maximinus II Daia - Follis - RIC VI Alexandria 152b

Followed by a rare issue (RIC 155b) * / N | A-E // ALE. It should be noted that RIC doesn't note examples for all workshops for this rare issue. This is followed by another relatively rare issue (RIC 157b) N / Branch | A-H // ALE or Branch N | A-H // ALE.

    This all finishes with two much more common issues, (RIC 160b) * / N / Branch | A-H // ALE which dates from A.D. 312 - A.D. 313. and * / N / Branch | A-H / Wreath // ALE in A.D. 313.

Now that I have bored you all... who can fill in some of my gaps...or add other coins from these issues? I must admit that I have several coins from a variety of officina for some of these issues but have held back from including them here.

I just thought that it mich be interesting to the see output of an emperor put in a chronological order like this.
