maxentius temple follis/ nice detail story about the twins/ feeding by wolves who building rome above the temple
Nice! Lots of eye-appeal! Here's mine with a different rendition of the temple: Maxentius as Augustus, AD 307-312 Roman billon follis; 6.57 g, 25.7 mm, 10 h Rome, AD 307-308 Obv: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, radiate head right Rev: CONSERV VRB SVAE, Roma seated facing in hexastyle temple, head left, globe in right hand, scepter in left, shield at side behind, Victories as acroteria, wreath on pediment, H left, R S in exergue Refs: RIC 202a; Cohen 21; RCV 14986 You may read about the Temple of Venus Felix and Roma Aeterna here.
SWEET! Here's mine, not near as sweet on the details as yours @ro1974 MAXENTIUS, FOLLIS, 306-312 AD O: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, Laureate head right R: CONSERV VRB SVAE, Roma seated left in tetrastyle temple presenting globe to Maxentius, captive seated between; wolf and twins in pediment, Victories each holding a wreath as acroteria. Mintmark AQP, Aquilea mint, RIC:113 25 mm, 6.1g.
Gorgeous OP. Now I need to clean the drool off my keyboard. Similar types were issued for Constantine. Here's one from Rome: Rome mint, A.D. 307 RIC 196 Obv: CONSTANTINVS NOB CAES Rev: CONSERVATO-RES VRB SVAE - Roma, in hexastyle temple, with globe, shield and scepter R[star]Q in exergue 27 mm, 5.8 g. And here's a contemporaneous one from Carthage: Carthage mint, summer, A.D. 307 RIC 61 Obv: CONSTANTINVS NOB CAES Rev: CONSERVATO-RES KART SVAE - Carthago, holding branches, in hexastyle temple PKΔ in exergue 25 mm, 6.9 g. I don't have one from Aquilea, but I hope to acquire one someday. It would make a nice set.
Great example of an iconic coin ! Here's the same for the first officina Maxentius, Follis Aquilea mint, 1st officina, AD 309-310 IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, Laureate head of Maxentius right CONSERV VRBS SVAE, Tetrastyle temple, Roma seated left, a foot on captive, giving a globe to Maxentius standing right. She wolf suckling Romulus and Remus in pediment. AQP at exergue 6.55 gr Ref : RCV # 14992 (100), Cohen #42 Q
Nice one ro! I still have to add one of these temple types to my collection. I've bid on two of these recently but so far haven't won the bid but I still have my eye open. This is the last of the tetrarchs that I don't have.
