This letter and note is one of the reasons I collect these notes. This pairing was a great find and the history is amazing. The note itself is a Dec 1763 New Jersey Eighteen Pence with one of the signers being Rich Smith. It is a beautiful note on its own. The letter is the icing on the cake. It reads: I recd.your favours per Parker and Stone with the Rum which part is yet unsold as I did not like any of the customer that has presented. In short, we don't hardly know who to trust now a days and cash is very scarce, breakers almost every day. the last rum per Stone is the worst I ever saw and such low proof I am afraid shall not sell it soon,. The market is now flutted with NC rum from Providence Rhode Island and I hear offered at 1/4 dollar per gallon. I have sold 13 of those per Parker @ 2/2 and 2/1 but the rest won't sell at 1/11. I shall do the best I can. I han't heard a word of the 50 (pounds)lawful money from Providence. Yours Rich Smith
quite the pieces of history there! The letter is hard to read, what with the english in use at the time lol but takes nothign away for the coolness of the two pieces
