    Hi all,

I've been wanting to add a 1787/1788 Massachusetts half cent or cent to my collection, and I have been watching prices for them in eBay to get a feel for what it will cost. These pieces seem to be rare and an example in the G - F grade can go for between $150 - $250.

I've noticed a seller, apogeellc, that has put several decent pieces of this type out there recently. It seems kind of funny to me that this seller has been putting one nice piece after another of this type of coin out there. Should I be concerned that this person may have created his own coin dies/press in his garage and is cranking out very good replicas of this coin and selling them as genuine? Or is it really likely that he/she has a true source for these?

    Any thoughts are appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Stephen,

I have both the 1787 and 1788 1 Cent coins. The 1787 I bought on EBay a few years back for about $125.00 (WAY to much) The 1788 i just bought a few months ago at a local coin show for $35.00. I would say go to a coin show if you can, if not do not use EBay, I did get riped off, but I was new and didn't care really. They are awesome coins ever though there both G-4.

Nott sure if you do or not, but get a red book to price them.

2008 Red book has them both at the following prices

1 Cent G4 F VF EF AU UNC
    1787 100 250 750 1500 3300 7000

    1788 100 250 600 1200 2750 5000
    with period

    1788 115 275 800 1750 3200 6500
    without period

1/2 cent G F VF EF AU UNC
    1787 100 250 625 1200 2000 3500

    1788 125 300 625 1300 2600 4000

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    S

clembo A closed mind is no mind

Most anything "colonial" I'd go with a reputable slab I'm afraid.

Lots of fakes out there that have been around for years.
