My dad recently gave me a small collection of dimes. In looking then over, one is what appears to be a 1916 d dime (which according to the internet has value...it in good condition, but has a Masonic stamp on it. No idea what that does to the value. The date is 1916 and it is a single letter what looks like a d thus the reason I am asking. Any input would be welcome. thanks. VB
Yes, a 1916-D dime is a sought after piece. I am sure there are some that may overlook the counter stamp to be able to add that to their collection. Sadly though, the counter stamp will negatively affect the value. Can you post a photo of both sides of the dime?
Here is a couple pics. It may be some other 1916 dime and some one here has more expertise than me and can offer more insight (d...not d). Thanks for the replay.
That is hard to look at as a smashed fender on a new car...... I cannot make out the reverse photo very well. There is certainly a mintmark there. If it is in fact a “D” mint, yes that is/was a very desirable coin. But man, that counterstamp has sure damaged that dime. I have no idea what the value may Be now.
Reverse picture is impossible to see the mint mark. It's a damaged coin, but some folks (idiots) would buy it........
The dang thing is damaged goods. If the collector of such coins is amiable to such a coin, then so be it. If it were me I'd pass, but I don't collect counter stamped coins. Even if it is, as the OP suggests, it doesn't belong in a purist collection. It'll never be recognized as anything more than damaged goods.
This is the best I can reprocess it with Photoscape, I would put it at 70% S, 30% D. as the darker areas representing the curvature of the S may be light corrosion. Good luck. Make sure its refundable if its not, Jim
Thanks guys. Like I said, I am not a long time collector and just putting together some coins. As for selling, likely not. Would not begin to know who to or how to sell. Hoping to get some solid confirmation as to the actuality of it. I recall he said it was the "d" but was stamped. Hate to think it is a d with damage.
