I just purchased this coin from Apmex. Their practice is to show a representative coin at the grade you are interested in and then shipping one from their stock to you. Obviously this is not the same coin that I used to judge whether I would purchase this coin or not. The mark on this coin is located on both mainly on obverse and reverse but mainly reverse. Should I ask for a new coin? Does anyone know if Apmex is a tough one to deal with in making exchanges?
I'm just not seeing what you are asking about. Either you need bigger photos, or I need stronger eyes. Are the colors of the two sides really that different??????
The obverse side is very hard to see but on the reverse side the mark is evident between the L and F of HALF. Just click on the photo and you will get a slightly bigger and detailed view. I would very much appreciate it if you could give an opinion. I find it strange that a coin would be graded this high with something like that on it.
Is this coin graded by a TPG? It looks like it might be in a slabbed holder. If so, what's the grade and who graded it? Maybe the grade or even the TPG can speak to the spot. If it's slabbed I'm sure APMEX makes no guarantees to what you get, RE: the representative coin picture you are provided doesn't provide you an example to base your purchase of a coin on. People always advise not to buy a coin sight unseen unless you know your dealer or are buying a new coin from the Mint (even those are spotty! LOL!) Also, keep in mind that APMEX are bullion dealers and not really coin dealers even though they offer a lot of coins with approximate grades place on raw coins and sell slabbed pieces.
Krispy thanks so much for your insight. The coin is at home and I am at work but I believe that it was graded at 66. As for the slabbing of the coin, this holder was from PCGS and from my recollection had the serial number on the front and PCGS label on the back. If it is graded by PCGS I find it hard to imagine it would get a 66 with this mark between the L and the F. This is why I offered it up here so more experienced people could give their opinion. As for APMEX's policy to ship coins that are only represented by the coin displayed I figured that a slabbed coin would be pretty safe. I also bought some other coins that were unslabbed but they were selling for about $3 each so I fugured that even if they sent me a coin that had been run over on train tracks I couldn't get burned too badly.
