Marc Antony Legionary Denarius LEG II 32-31 B.C.\

Issued before the naval Battle of Actium in 31 B.C. and used to pay the legions and fleet. Mark Antony and Cleopatra were defeated by Octavian, eventually leading to his title of Augustus.

I have compiled a list of the Legion list and will download later.

and this one, which is very worn. It may be LEG X but it is just a guess from what I can see.

Can somebody tell me what the black gunk on the obverse is? Should I try to clean it?

It could be dirt , paint or tar? First try soaking in distilled water for a couple of days and then probe with a cocktail stick. If you warm it in an oven you could try the stick again to see if there is any movement and if so consider a solvent such as acetone to lift it. I can't see that you could degrade the coin. I tend to do nothing.

Great coins all and thank you for sharing. For an interesting study on the history of Actium , this is an interesting book that I would recommend. I collect Fleet denarii myself. actium.jpg

How was it sent, first class? priority mail? Do you have the tracking number?
It seems that USPS is having delivery problems. You could call USPS customer service and get additional information.

August 27 was just a few days ago, maybe because of the long weekend they are having delays.
I had a check mailed to Lancaster a few weeks ago and it took 7 days to arrive. I thought it was lost, put a hold payment on it and sent another one; next day they received the first one...

I send from Thailand. It will leave the airport in Thailand and it stays in customs for a few days, after which it continues making its way to its destination. This is 100% normal for everything I've sent to the US.

Not even a month is not a cause for concern. Customs sometimes holds packages for quite a while...depends on how busy they are. I have sent and received hundreds of international packages and would say the average shipping time is 2-3 weeks.

Is it recommended to soak the Legionary Denarius, and then use verdi-care to protect the patina?

There is no need to soak and especially no reason to use verdi-care

There is a yellowish stain around the heads of the rowers on this coin, looks like algae or encrustation, should I just leave it alone? Marc Anthony obv2.jpg , should I just leave it alone?
