Marc Antony Legionary Denarius LEG II 32-31 B.C.\ Issued before the naval Battle of Actium in 31 B.C. and used to pay the legions and fleet. Mark Antony and Cleopatra were defeated by Octavian, eventually leading to his title of Augustus. I have compiled a list of the Legion list and will download later. Got this one recently: Marcus Antonius, Legionary Denarius Military mint traveling with Marcus Antonius in Greece, Aegae or Patrae, Autumn 32 – Spring 31 BC before the Battle of Actium 16 mm, 2.662 g, 3h Crawford 544/21; Sydenham 1225; Kestner 3850; BMCRR East 199; RSC 35; Sear Imperator 358; Babelon Antonia 114; RBW 1843. and this one, which is very worn. It may be LEG X but it is just a guess from what I can see. Can somebody tell me what the black gunk on the obverse is? Should I try to clean it? 16 mm, 2.929 g, 6h
It could be dirt , paint or tar? First try soaking in distilled water for a couple of days and then probe with a cocktail stick. If you warm it in an oven you could try the stick again to see if there is any movement and if so consider a solvent such as acetone to lift it. I can't see that you could degrade the coin. I tend to do nothing.
I"ve collected Legionary denarii on and off as I find them, including denarii of Septimius Severus. These are my examples.
Great coins all and thank you for sharing. For an interesting study on the history of Actium , this is an interesting book that I would recommend. I collect Fleet denarii myself.

August 27 was just a few days ago, maybe because of the long weekend they are having delays. I had a check mailed to Lancaster a few weeks ago and it took 7 days to arrive. I thought it was lost, put a hold payment on it and sent another one; next day they received the first one...
I send from Thailand. It will leave the airport in Thailand and it stays in customs for a few days, after which it continues making its way to its destination. This is 100% normal for everything I've sent to the US.
Not even a month is not a cause for concern. Customs sometimes holds packages for quite a while...depends on how busy they are. I have sent and received hundreds of international packages and would say the average shipping time is 2-3 weeks.
There is a yellowish stain around the heads of the rowers on this coin, looks like algae or encrustation, should I just leave it alone? , should I just leave it alone?
