I have several 1953, 5 cent coins from Malaya & British Borneo and one appears to be bronze. Is this an error coin or was there a switch in metal that year that isn't noted in the "Standard Catalog of World Coins"? I see it as copper-nickel in my catalog too. weigh the brass looking 1 for weight difference. could be plated or wrong metal planchet

I have an old laboratory balance scale. I placed a copper nickel 1953, 5 cent coin (with similar wear) on one plate and the bronze one on the other and they balanced each other. This coin was minted by the British Royal Mint and they mint coins for many countries. So, I think it most likely that a bronze planchet was accidentally punched out. I checked the coin under a microscope and though there are some hairline scratches on it, none revealed an underlying copper-nickel color. I'm trying to identify the countries whose coins were minted by the Royal Mint in that same year to see if any had bronze coins with similar planchets. Any information would be appreciated.

Is the weight around the same as what a normal coin would be? To me it looks like it has been copper washed. It does not look bronze to me.
