I just received my MAH set. I like the packaging. Shrink wrapped. Maybe hold some to sell later as unopened sets? Your thoughts?
Funny you should bring this up! Just last night, I tuned into the Coin Vault show and this very same set, which is currently offered by the US Mint for $72.95 plus $4.95 S/H, was being oitched for ONLY $109.95 plus $9.95 S/H! They were really playing this sucker up too for the folks who "could not afford the two coin San Francisco Set or the 25th Anniversary Set! The under $150 collector if you will! I wonder how many were taken in by this? As for the set, I have 2 and there wasn't anything remarkable about them other than the SAE. It'll have a maximum mintage of around 352,000 which puts it below 1994P Territory (372,000). This means that it'll sell for way more than your typical SAE Proof coin (s mint or not) in the next 5 to 10 years. I expect that the $5 bills which are included will only fetch premiums on the super low serial numbers. I'd be willing to pay a premium on a 150000xx Serial Numbered bill.
I saw that last night too. I wonder how many will buy those at $110 plus shipping without realizing they don't have to pay that much.
I just opened one. Not a mark or blemish of any kind on the Eagle. The number on the five is JL15027852D. The five wouldn't get a 70 because of centering issues, but it's nice. Maybe 68 or 69. I wish I could put up pics.
63052D and 28950D for my two five's. Neither eagle is a 70 IMO but then PR70DCAM only counts if you get it graded and then sell it. Other than that, it's just a BS grade awarded on a percentage scale.
I can help in the pic department. My fiver is #50552. The ASE is a 69 IMO, the obverse is right there in 70 territory but the reverse has about three very tiny frost breaks. I'm happy with the set. edit: keep clicking on the pic, it'll get big enough to actually see it.
If they sell all 100,000 sets then there would have to be a number one. It looks like they are being issued randomly and not in order so it's probably the luck of the draw as to what numbers you get. If they get close to a sell out it would be nice to know if any good numbers are left. It might be worth taking a chance on ordering a couple more in the hopes of getting lucky.
NGC grading of MAH Eagle Q. Will you have special labels for the Making American History Coin and Currency Set? If so, how will the process work? A. Thanks for the question. NGC's "S" label for San Francisco coins will be available for this set. We will be giving the coins a COIN AND CURRENCY SET PEDIGREE. It is not necessary to send in the complete Coin and Currency set. You may cut it in half so that only the sealed portion with the coin is sent.
