    Hello All,

I'm not sure if this is the proper forum for this, but I will go ahead and try it.

I have the following item that I am looking for more information on:
    Diameter: ~30mm
    Weigh: ~10.7 grams
    Edge: Plain
    Material: Appears to be Brass
    Orientation: Medallic
    Photos:
    Sherman_OBV.JPG
    Sherman_REV.JPG

Any information about what this is, an idea of the date range, value, etc would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You.

I forgot to mention in the previous post about condition.
Condition: AU/BU with toning, but a small green spot on the drum on the reverse.

Again, any information about this item would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I personally don't know what it is, but it doesn't look old. Looks like something that might have been in a mid-20th century Franklin mint sort of set.

    Maybe @johnmilton might know?

Nice looking piece. Love the reverse design. It has the look of something a bit modern.

I admit to not knowing a lot about this, but design has late 19th century look to it. Sherman refused to get involved in politics (If nominated, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve.”). Therefore his medals are not listed in most guides. I have had chances to buy a few of them, but have always passed. That reverse design appeared some Lincoln, Grant and McClellan pieces. The goldish finish looks like 1890s to the early 1900s, but older dies can used for years.

Thank you all for your replies.

Since my original post I was doing some searching on Google for "General Sherman Medals" and ran across a listing on WorthPoint with a matching example of the piece I have.

The link to the WorthPoint listing is the following:
    https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/early-medal-honoring-william-tecumseh-106155902

The description provided on WorthPoint only gives basic information about the design and anecdotal information about when it was issued and for what purpose. WorthPoint also mentioned to go to Ebay and look at "TE Collectibles", which I did, but was unable to locate this example.

While fishing around on Ebay I did find an example of this that was uniface. Here's the link:
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Civil-War-...=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
The above example sold on Ebay on February 8th, 2020 (relatively recently) for $99.95. Again, note that the example sold was a uniface item.

All of the above information leads me to think that this is similar to Civil War Store Card tokens and Patriotic tokens that were sometimes issued with a common obverse design and varying reverse designs. This still does not necessarily give an answer as to when and why this was issued. I have not seen the particular reverse design on my example appearing on other examples, but that is a very interesting point.

I'm curious what any of you think about this information and what anyone else might be able to add to this. Again, any information is greatly appreciate and any discussion is encouraged.

    Thank You
