maybe man made error wheat , 1983 starburst dime neat what is it?

    See dime below
I was hoping to get some information as to what this type of error is called, I'm not a collector or dealer, I found this in my cash register at my chevron station a few years ago and put it away cause it was so odd and recently was told is was a big time error but what type and what do I do with it.

    Hi survivor,

I hate telling people that they do not have an error coin, but instead have a coin that is damaged.

    Hope you understand.
    Good luck.

Starburst dime and half 3 1983

Ok here it is it is different. It is starburst throughout the back also and there are like 2 small things that look like metal was flinged on and causes a raised line. what do you think. i'm on a good one and can't wait to get to work and search my register hehehe

Always hard to say for sure based on a pic - but it looks like die polishing marks to me. Nothing unusual - just an ordinary dime.

I looked through hundreds of dimes today and found nothing that compares, I will take some good pics and hopefully It will show up really good.

I'll have to agree with GD.
That appears to be die erosion.
Not typically an error that commands a premium.
    Sorry.

its not erosion, it looks like that due to the type of pic i took, here is a pic of the back, all other dimes i have seen are smooth on the surfaces where there is no design, dont you see the difference?

Hey guys, us new guys need more info to understand the meanings of your descriptions, so I researched this dime and found out exactly what die eroded coins are and posted a new thread. Also I'm not in this for the money so whether a coin brings a premium or not I still want to know what caused it to be different. Thanks and I found another one so i'll post it in a bit, I'll keep you on your toes. I do appreciate your input but would like a litttle more than a few words I don't understand. No hard feelings and i'm back on the hunt.

OK - I understand your problem with not understanding the terminology. So let me ask you this - the lines on the coin - are they raised ? In other words do they stick up above the surface ?

If they do - then I believe the marks are by die polishing. What die polishing is - is simple. It's just what it sounds like. When a die becomes worn from striking a number of coins the mint workers will remove it from the press and polish the surfaces of the die so that it can be used again. Sometimes this polishing is a little agressive and it leaves marks in the die. So when another coin is struck with this die - those marks show up on the coin in the form of raised lines.

    Hope that helps.

I think it is sinking in, now I not only what die erosion is and how it is caused , but I also know that what I called a sunburst affect is flow lines fron an eroded die that was polished, well something like that anyway, I'm on the right track, Thanks
