Magnus Maximus Dulce et Decorum est....

    Hello again !
Just picked up an obverse die match of my recently acquired Magnus Maximus Siliqua.
    Trier mint
    2.11 grams
The seller stated that die matches for this type were rare so that's a plus :)

FYI - "Die matches are rare" means that many dies were used, thus, many coins were made.

Still, a die match is something extra neat. Wonderful coin.

Congrats on the sweet die-match ... sadly, I don't have an example of your name-sake (hmmm, what is the deal/story behind Magnus Maximus being your favourite?)

    ... very cool

    :D
Was wondering if people would ask.
I find Magnus Maximus to be a very interesting character of history who was at the right (and wrong) place at the right time. For example he was sent to the Danube frontier as a Dux ( Duke) right before a particular battle at Adrianople( which he probably fought in)
Then he made his way to Britain where the troops so happened to be ticked off at Gratian , the rest is history.
Also it doesn't hurt that he was a fellow Spaniard ;)

A highlight of MM is that he was the first Christian emperor to order the execution of Christians for heresy. He was ahead of his time as this later became standard practice.

Ironically yes. His execution of Priscillian set a bad precedent. Ironically enough he tolerated polytheism and Symmachus and the polytheists supported him. Very interesting .
