I like a coins of the small countries, such as the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is a rather interesting coins, I think. I want to share my coins with you, my friends and I hope that you"ll share your coins too:hug:
I have a few coins from Luxembourg: Luxembourg 10 Centimes 1930 Grand Duchess Charlotte Luxembourg 1 Franc 1939 Luxembourg 20 Francs 1946 Luxembourg 50 Francs 1946 Luxembourg 100 Francs 1946 - Knight on horseback Luxembourg 100 Francs 1963 Luxembourg 250 Francs 1963 Luxembourg 100 Francs 1964 Grand Duke Jean
Note how the country name varies in terms of language and spelling. The French version used on most early pieces is "Luxembourg"; in Luxembourgish it was "Letzeburg" first, and today it is "Lëtzebuerg". By the way, "Jang de Blannen" means "John the Blind" - and that would be him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_of_Bohemia So that coin was issued to commemorate the 600th anniversary of his death. Jean the Grand Duc. 1 franc 1965, copper-nickel, mintage - 3000000. 1 franc 1990,nickel-steel, mintage - 25010000.
These are all I have from Luxembourg. They are left over from my travels before the Euro. I really like the horse & rider reverse on those coins dated 1946 from Willieboyd2.
Those "IML" initials, by the way, refer to the Institut Monétaire Luxembourgeois. Due to the monetary union with Belgium in the pre-euro years, they did not really need a fully fledged central bank. In 1998 however that IML turned into the "Banque centrale du Luxembourg" (BCL). Christian
And not only back then. Monaco also used that horse/rider (the 13/14c seal of Admiral Grimaldi) on the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins until 2004: http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance/images/image8549.gif A similar depiction (the "Vytis") can be found on most current Lithuanian coins: http://www.lb.lt/lt/banknotai/monetos/5lt_av_2.jpg Here is another piece from Luxembourg with an interesting design (Image: BCL). It shows an ancient Roman helmet mask which was found in Hellange, LU in front of a map of the country: Attached is an image of the helmet mask; more info is here: http://www.bcl.lu/en/currency/numismatic/piece_Hellange/index.html Christian
