    Hi Folks,

Got this Lucky Penny..the IHC is in really good shape, but there's a partially black layer obverse, of which I want to get rid. IMG_20181127_190446.jpg IMG_20181127_185354.jpg

    Doesn't really matter.
Since it is encased it's already damaged :yack:.. So it really isn't Lucky

I would 1st try a distilled water soak. That Lucky Penny is worth more IN the holder than outside it. Those are some of the more popular encased cents. (Pan-Am)

Interesting tidbit- these lucky encased cents started around 1901. That is a 1st year of issue so to speak. If you see one dated pre-1901 it is most likely a fake or the coin was switched out.

    Don't you mean Post-1901 not Pre-1901?

Whatever you do, be very careful. There are different metals involved. It would be difficult to treat the one without affecting the other.

Worth money as is that removing the cent.

How about this - if you see a lucky encased cent dated BEFORE 1901, the coin has most likely been switched out. I wasnt talking about the pan-am exclusively, im talking ALL encased cents. They usually include a coin that is dated, the exact same year that it was encased.
