I just got these two 1943P War Nickels in a shipment today. I'm not an expert but would these be considered "lowball" coins?
Most of the war nickels I find are in similar condition so I wouldn't consider it a collectible lowball. However take what I say with a grain of salt because my coin collecting knowledge is limited very limited.
It's lowball but a rather high grade example. The second one is probably an AG-3 coin and to really be desirable you need to try and find a FR-2 or PR-1. Then you'll have to spend the $30+ to get it certified as a no problem piece for that grade.
From the context I'm guessing lowball is a variety for this coin. Can you explain what you're talking about?
Not a variety, just a collecting goal, the Lowball Registry collectors try to acquire the LOWEST problem free graded coins they can. Premiums paid for these very low graded coins can be quite high. Why? Because one low grade coins are seldom slabbed so very low grade pieces are hard to find. And two, as the grede gets lower and lower the chances of damage that would keep the coin out of a problem free slab becomes greater and greater. Once again this mkes the very low graded coins hard to find.
A lowball coin is a coin that has a very low grade, like PR-1 or FR-2. Some people collect graded examples of these coins to go for a lowball registry set, or just because they like them. edit: Looks like Condor beat me! I shouldn't watch sportcenter while posting, it really delays me...
