There's been a lot of talk on the site recently about coin giveaways via Secret Santa and I certainly think that's very worthwhile and would love to participate as I have in the past. I have a little different problem though. To stock my little website I typically buy big lots of coins and sell them off one at a time. Over the years I've been throwing the lower quality and/or value coins (mostly the smaller ae3/4 types) in a box with the thought that one day I'd sell them in small lots. Well, the box is overflowing and I've gotten too old and way too lazy to do anything with them. I have come to the conclusion that the best thing is to give them away to newbie collectors of ancients. As I said, these aren't the greatest coins, and many are probably not even identifiable, but the price is certainly right; zero dollars including shipping. I'd like to do this in small group lots via the cointalk venue but if it's inappropriate please let me know. I'm not even sure if there are any newbies on the site who would appreciate them. Just not sure how else to do this. Would certainly appreciate any suggestions. Brian
YN giveaway? This is a very generous idea you have here. Maybe the YNs on this site (like me) will appreciate the coins. I'm getting interested in ancients right now. I kinda like them because there are so many varieties. I also appreciate ancients because of the history behind them.
Maybe post this thread in the contest section, it doesn't have to be a contest, just a simple giveaway to people who may be interested in getting into ancients or dabble in them.. https://www.cointalk.com/forums/contests/ I've been on a Great Britain/France silver kick lately, just haven't been into ancients lately. It's nice to flip flop within a hobby.
I think it is a great idea but the realist in me says you should have some sort of screening criteria to make sure they don't just turn around and sell them. I think there are a lot of novice collectors out there who would appreciate them. You could post it in Contests to get more attention, or you could just post a thread that says "who wants a few ancient coins, message me why you think I should send you some and we'll talk"
It is a great idea. Target the YN first. Theres some middle age to older people like myself who have collected other types for years but just started collecting ancients within the last year or so. Just to be fair to every age group. I have plenty of low quality & don't need any more. I'm hoping I've graduated atleast a little over the months.
Yes, you can do it, but please utilize PM so addresses can be kept away from the bots that visit us daily. Jim
