I was looking at some coins I have from Haiti and was surprised at what I learned. This coin is B.U. and very low mintage, A only listed as $30.00 value. Hard to understand but I like it anyway. An interesting design for a Human Rights commem. Now as for the price or value, well, a low mintage alone (the BU version apparently has a mintage of 800) does not mean much if hardly anybody wants the piece ... Christian
Demand down? I don't know if Occam's Razor would apply, but perhaps native demand has gone down since the earthquake. --Dan
In U.S. coins low mintage generally means or often means a great deal - in world coins is only sometimes can mean a great deal and it ain't often.
I totally agree. Supply and demand. However, there are many undervalued coins that could be a decent investment over a period of time.
Of course it may, Love your avitar!!! A favorite saying down here is "if it ain't U.S. it's just a mess"! But I collect world coins I like just as stamps. Many are supreme in design and such a great learning tool Often when I talk to school groups I take mt 3 Krause world catologs from 1700 to date and 1 Red Book. It's the first thing I tell them. "this stack of catologs has all the coins in the world since 1700's to date". Then I put the little old Red Book beside it and say, "and here is all the coins in this country since the same time". One stack being a foot high the other 2 inches, and I tell them, "that's how big the world is compared to just the U.S."! All of their jaws drop and I've got em "hook, line and sinker. I do like world coins but just for having the ones I like though.
I am a lover of beautiful coins. If I ever figure all this scan thing out, I will up some of my collections but only when I can do them justice. The 1st Chinese Lunar collection in Gold and Silver. Totally awesome.
Haïti being one of the poorest countries all over the world, I'm not even sure there was a native demand before the earthquacke Q
Well, I am sure there wasn't. Those coins were issued during the regime of the Duvaliers, primarily for collectors outside the country. And their prices have always been fairly low ... Christian
