Last week I went to the drive-thru at the bank and got 5000 pennies for my kids to search through. After the the first couple of rolls, we began to realize that we were probably searching through someone else's rejects. Not a wheatie in the entire lot. This has never happened to us before because I draw on so many banks for my coin searches and I vary my bank every time. I did manage to find a pretty neat die crack in the last roll I opened. A saving grace. I took them back to a different branch of the same bank and passed them to the teller to run through his counting machine. As I was waiting, I noticed he had 7 Silver quarters in his tray. I asked for my 50 dollars back and to include the seven quarters and he gave them to me. I got a 1935, 1947, 1950, 1962, 1963, and 2 1964's. Not a bad trade for a lot of worthless pennies. I guess it just goes to show that if a door closes, a window gets open somewhere else.
I personally would say the silver quarters were far better than any amount of wheat cents! But it's me and silver Washington Quarters, i love 'em!
I haven't really been into the Washingtons for a while. I have 6 sets already with very few missing dates. But let me ask you a question. When I was at the bank, a guy came in with about 500 dollars in quarters from a vending machine company. Are vending machine coins a good, fair, or poor source to pull silver from? I had the bank set aside the bag of $1000 for me to pick up later and I'm wondering if it would be worth going through considering the source. What do you think?
That depends on the machines. Many newer machines will not accept the silver coins and that would make them an VERY bad source for silver. Some machines do take them and those should be average for finding silver. Good luck!
i find silver all the time in my machines. i have several where people seem to spend nothing but silver!!! those i search the entire change bin every time. so if you are in northern colorado you will not find silver from my bags turned in to the bank!!! happy hunting, michael
