Just curious what the consensus is on this? Does ANACS do a strict job on grading or are they a bit lax with both the grade and the AT/NT issue? I think this might be AT (with that purple color) but I am no expert -- I have seen some wildly toned ASE's floating around. I think I would feel better about this if it was in a PCGS or NGC holder ... but even that is no guarantee these days.

Actually, The purple is the more natural of those colors. The few ASE's I own are starting to tone on the edges and it's a bright purple and electric blue. ANACS is ok, though I prefer their older standards better.

ANACS seems to be a "kind" grading company. I see lots of their coins, I feel, should grade lower. But grading is all in one's opinion. So if you like there grading styles, keep with them!

I agree with Guy. I have some electric blue/rose ASE I bought in mint tubes in the late 80s , early 90s, I would never put on sale as they appear AT but are not. Easier to dip them before as the extra bucks not worth the headaches.

I havent seen any grading that is hugely out of line from any of the companies. You can argue up or down a grade, but usually thats about it. And as said, it can be somewhat subjective.

As for the artificial or natural thing. I think that distinction is bogus. Perhaps purposeful and accidental would be a better distinction. Any toning is a naturral reaction between the metal of the coin and whatever chemical/O2 combination the coin happens to be exposed to.

Either way, if you like the coin, it really doesnt matter why the coin got that color, just that you like it. And its a very nice coin. :)
