Interesting coin...I would appreciate some help with this coin/clip.It is a Louis XVI silver coin. The coin has been used to make a silver money clip of some sort, so I can't see the back side without taking it apart. It has stamped on the front "LUD.XVI.D.G.FR.ET NA.RE.B" It also has a painters brush beneath the left facing bust. It is in excellent condition and I can't bring myself to remove it from the clip to see the back side. Any help? Thank you in advance.
Howdy tucker - Welcome to the Forum !! If you can provide a picture it would be most helpful. It would also be helpful if you could tell us the size of the coin in millimeters. If you cannot measure it - then compare it to the size of a US coin that is equal size.
Thanks for the welcom. Sorry it took so long fo me to respond...I just returned from work. The coin measures 42 mm across and 2 1/2 mm thick at the edge. I will try to take a digital phot on post it soon. Thank you for responding, any help is appreciated.
Ok - here's a couple for you to look at. Tell me which one your coin looks like. # 1 edited - OK - does it look like the one above ?
Which other type of King Louis XVI Ecu is there apart from the traditional shield type & the 'Constitutional' type? I am aware of only 2 types, not 3. Aidan.
Read the legend that tucker provided in his original post. What you are calling the traditional type ends in REX - not REB. Only the Bearn type legend ends in REB.
Oh,I had forgotten about the Province of Bearn issue. As I have never had one of these coins, let alone seen one,I am very unfamiliar with its design, which could be distinctive to the area. Aidan.
You are correct the lettering on the coin ends with REB. Also there is a painters brush at the bottom of the bust. Over the weekend I will try to post a photo. It appears to be unpolished/cleaned but the image is sharp. Thanks again...
