I made another trip to the coin shop today and since it was Saturday,Bernie the ancient-medieval coin guy was there with his box of treasures.I bought an Edward IV penny from the York mint and was flipping through his French stuff when I spotted this coin for $14...I couldn't resist.Did I do OK...Doug or anyone familiar with this era?

It's a 2 sols, KM #603.1. They are neat coins and from a unique era in French history, but I think you paid a bit much given the condition. Krause lists the value in VG as $3. That could easily be off - but I doubt it is off by a factor of 5. Even so, $14 is a cheap price to pay for a bit of history ;)

Think he'd believe me if I took it back and told him I didn't open it? LOL

The last of the King Louis XVI 2 Sols was struck in 1793.However,the 1793's are an extremely underrated date,no matter which mintmark they are.

For what it is worth, I think you can throw away Krause when it comes to coins like that. You certainly did do `OK'. The coin is in very collectable condition. Although the Paris mint (A) is the most commonly found type, even examples that are in poor condition can regularly be seen selling for $3 + .
