I got my coins in the mail today, and i gotta say, the strike is possibly the best i have ever gotten from the mint. The mirrored fields are flawless, and the frosted surfaces are nearly perfect. There is 1 small break in the surface on one of the coins. Should be fairly easy to see in the pics Proof obverse I absolutely love the wood graien affect the portrait has! Proof reverse Uncirculated obverse Uncirculated reverse This image IMHO is just stunning! I love how the light creates the dark spots in the low lying areas. the depth of the design shows up amazingly i think I do not yet have these coins posted to my site with all the background i usually include with the commems, but i should be able to get all that posted later tonight. I was just excited about the coins
Ok, so i worked feverishly to post the images to the site! and while doing that i noticed how bad my head has been in the clouds lately! I posted my Lincoln commems to my site late last week...and in my hussle... i must have forgotten to post it here so, while browsing the 2009 Louis Braille coins, stop for a sec to look at the Lincoln images as well Here is my US Commems page. and Thanks for looking
Oh so beautiful! I don't even really like this coin, or the lincoln, but, I must say, you've got 2 70's... Very nice, and I'm glad the mint was nice to you...lol
The image of the boy reading is very nice but I am sorry to say I do not like the portrait of him cant realy say why either LOL I see what you mean about the grain effect and that I quite like, just something about the image Now as for the Abraham Lincoln commemorative that I realy like the mint has done a fine job with his portrait
The portrait looks good to me. Problem is that the most common "image" we have of Louis Braille is based on his death mask, with his eyes closed. While he was alive, however, his eyes were open ... Some countries have issued (or will issue) circulating commems on this occasion. The Indian one uses the death mask portrait, I think. So will the Belgian piece, while the Italian coin won't have a portrait. Ten years ago France issued a 100F collector coin which shows Braille with open eyes; no iris or pupil though. Christian
Yes spock.. where have you been? Im not big on the design on the coin either. I do like the reverse, but i agree with the portrait on the obverse. Maybe a 3/4 view instead of a full frontal view... maybe some Braille around the portrait... i dont know if its missing something, or if a portrait rotation would be enough....
The mint must have sent them out at the same time because it seems like quite a few people received them yesterday as well. I have to agree with your comments about the fields and frosted relief portion of the coin. Those were the first things that stuck out in my mind when I looked at the coin. The proof had one small break in the surface on the obverse, probably not even noticeable in the pics. The unc had some small breaks in the area of the dots on the reverse. Other than that, I thought that everything else was perfect. I am very pleased.
here is the indian one i cant see a mask? http://cgi.ebay.com.my/VERY-RARE-IN...ZViewItemQQitemZ360147846754#ebayphotohosting
Seems you are right; that is not the death mask style but rather resembles the portrait on that French piece. Hope that Daggarjon won't mind our little "excursion" ... This page for example shows the portrait based on Braille's death mask: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Braille On the French 1999 coin the eyes are open: http://images.delcampe.com/img_large/auction/000/056/355/603_001.jpg Here http://www.indiacoins.de/New-Coins.htm is another photo of the new coin from India. A little blurry; sorry for the confusion, but yes, that portrait is not in "death mask style" either. These are the two €2 pieces that I mentioned: http://www.ecb.europa.eu/euro/coins/comm/shared/img/comm_2009_be.jpg http://www.ecb.europa.eu/euro/coins/comm/shared/img/comm_2009_it.jpg They have not been issued yet, but as far as I can tell the Belgian piece shows a portrait based on the death mask. Anyway, could be an interesting "theme" collection. Clinker had a great post about this somewhere around here ... Ah, found it: http://www.cointalk.com/forum/t51425/ Christian
Not at all, not in the least! Any further discussion about the coin and its design is very welcome I bow in appologies Spock lol i was under the impression from what i read elsewhere that the death mask might have been used.
