A friend of mine works at our local bank and someone brought in $150.00 worth of pennies. Their grandpa has been wrapping them for over twenty years. Just getting started so far no shields, lots of copper and wheats. If there is nice zinc coins so far 1989 and 1990 that have no errors I have been rewrapping them to put in spend pile. Does anyone see any reason for keeping them just wondering what the pros think. Thanks.
Unless something really stands out, Laurie, no, I wouldn't keep them. Send them back to work in the economy.
Because they are only worth 1¢, I have a tendency to keep all copper cents, especially the wheat backs. Why? Because I like them and they are a dying breed. I also like giving them to others for their enjoyment. .>
My husband told me also to keep the copper since the zinc ones rot so quick who knows how many pennies will there be in the future.
There are tons of varieties amongst the zincs that have better value than the coppers and most of the LWCs. I wouldn’t overlook the zinc cents especially if they are in AU/BU condition. There are many CRH enthusiasts who will go through a box of cents to find maybe 12 LWCs. And that’s fine if that’s all they’re interested in. But truth be told they pass over tons of higher value LMCs…even Zincolns.
PS - there are many cooper hoarders but I’m not sure that there will be any juice in that squeeze. Again - to each their own. But it is unlikely that the government will allow cents to be melted down in our lifetime. Better to flip the money to sustain the hobby or invest the money in other ways.
There is nothing wrong with keeping Post 82 Zincs if you store them correctly. Especially if they are still red and show good luster. Save some of the better ones for a later date when you know errors and Variety's better.
