I'd say grease or a possibility could be cloth/paper, think that's a long shot, I'm not the guy to ask really but someone will have the diagnosis . If someone grinded it off then it wouldn't be as smooth and even as it is.

 

I would say that it was struck through grease or other debris. This is an great example due to the surface it covers. It's also s common error. Save and protect it but it's not worth grading as it would only bring about $5.00.

 

Any value?
