I'd be interested in hearing from some of you ancient collectors out there on this subject. Have you ever bid on a lot of ancient roman coins? What is your experience with buying ancients in lots? I've won one of those uncleaned lots for less than $10, and I was disappointedin that purchase. But I came across this listing today.

What do you think of this listing?

It looks like there could be a few decent coins in there. Current bid is at $128. Even at $200 for the lot, you're paying less than five bucks a coin. It might be worth that just to sort through them?

    What say ye?

At $3 a coin, not too shabby.

I agree with Rip, although a cursory look through the coins doesn't show anything out of the ordinary. But, again, $3 per is not a bad price at all. You can hardly buy uncleaned lots with tons of culls for that price.

I guess it depends on how much you like the desert "patina" look. I have a few well-conserved coins with such a patina, but I wouldn't want a fistful of them, just for the sake of variety. Were you thinking of cleaning them further?

I buy lots all of the time. I would suggest sir going for a slightly higher quality lot. I find if a coin is not at least a gF, or rare, I do not appreciate it that much. As your collection grows, I am afraid this would happen to you as well.

If you are striking out on EBay, I suggest other sites like CNG electronic auctions, Vauctions, and the like. Lots of places want to sell you coins.

Agree with Bing and Ripley, dirty culls can cost $2 each, if you could pick these up for $3 you would have fun lot to begin a collection and learn a bit of attribution. Just know what your buying, these are not high quality coins just decent honest ones with reasonable details.

Ummm, I like the whole idea of a diamond in the rough, but I'm almost 100% sure that is a sucker's bet ... for example, who is gonna accidentally toss-in a Nero? (ummm, or somethin' even better than a Nero) ...

=> I'm pretty sure that it's all "common junk" ... I would take your $128 and buy yourself something awesome!!

At the current price, I would say it's a good deal. The price may go even higher since it is an auction. I might think twice about it, if the average is $5 a coin or more.

A lot of common coins there, yes. If you got the lot, you would fill many reverse types very fast which is good about that lot. I thought I saw a Magnus Maximus reverse in that lot which is hard to find. Funny that the photo only shows the reverse even on the obverse photo.
