I'm very happy to find this form. I have been away from e-bay coins about a year. Went there the other night and thought I had lost my mind. Ether the coin market had gone to H--- or scam artist have taken over. I put "Gallery grading company" in Google and found this form. Scam artist have taken over, if e-bay does not do something it will kill ebays coin market[/SIZE] Gary
Just like the power seller Aboncom. They own and operate their own grading service: Star Grading Service (SGS) where most coins they sell are MS70 or PR70. I see they started slabbing Morgans. Guess the grade? Well they are not MS70, but MS68!! Wait till those buyers take that coin into a con shop. They will get laughed out of the store and the hobby will lose another numismatic (newbie or intermediate).
I've purchased bullion coins and lower priced commemoratives from Ebay with pretty good luck so far, getting about what I expected and wanted. I wouldn't touch anything with advertised high numismatic value out of fear of being ripped off, or being sent a coin other than the one pictured.
Buying and selling coins on ebay can be tricky at ANY price level. But you should always check the sellers as thoroughly as possible before spending money with them, regardless of the value of the coin. For an expensive piece, I'd encourage you to contact the seller and ask them a few questions like return policy, how long they've had the coin, etc. Be aware of how long it takes them to respond to your question. Find out how long they've been selling on ebay. Are they COIN SELLERS or someone who sells something else, but just happens to have a coin? Do they have a brick-and-mortar store? Are they quick to give out it's location, address, phone etc? Are they willing to talk by phone? Doing a little research and trying to find a "comfort level" with a seller that you' haven't purchased from before if extremely important with any coin, but obviously moreso for coins that are expensive, rare, or highly counterfeited. Exactly why I won't buy ANY slabbed coin(s) unless they are from PCGS, NGC, ANACS or on rare occasions ICG. I will buy common coins or original packaged commemorative sets from ebay after thoroughly checking out the seller. As for expensive, investment coins, I only buy those from my regular dealers at a coin show where I can inspect the actual coin.
Slabbed?? I actually prefer unslabbed since many times the view of the coin is negatively impacted and, of course, the services themselves are engaged in a mini Civil War, sniping and cutting at each other continuously. I use NGC, PCGS, ANACS and ACCGS who I happen to like. They are very conservative, double-sided grading and they put my 1796 Quarter through a variety of tests for authenticity - comparison with museum pieces, specific gravity, outside analyst, microscopic search for "old" lesions, etc. I use TPGs more for authenticity than grade since PCGS (among others) shows, how to say it nicely, a certain elasticity for "preferred" customers, particularly when accompanied with a note reading, "Do not bother slabbing unless it grades MS65". LOL Take care----
For whatever it's worth - they'll do the same thing for you or anybody else. So will the other grading companies. But you'll still pay the fee.
I dont think it matters if you are a bricklayer or a world reknown numismatician when it comes to selling on Ebay- I think E-Bay was built on the principal-one man's junk is another man's treasure. Yes it is has it's share of theives and rip-off artist as does the general population. But what seperates reputable sellers from the scam artist is honesty and integrity. I only sell to support my buying habit- I'm not trying to earn a living- I never represent myself as anything other than a diehard collector (I started collecting at the age of three with my Dad- but he only collected Morgans and there was no internet so my knowledge is limited but i try hard to educate myself.) and I always will buy your coin back if you are not happy. (except for large lots of mixed coins because it's too hard to keep track of) I have been taken- but never for more than I can afford to lose. I have also bought some great coins. My dad past away but he left me the morgans and each one has a different memory in it. I wanted to pass them on to my son's but not one of them has the least bit of interest. I don't understand this but have accepted it. Okay now you want see some of the coins I got on Ebay this week? I haven't rec'vd them yet --I let you know if i took or got took
