    Greetings, CT colleagues. Happy Thanksgiving!

This week, I will celebrate my 40th anniversary as a collector.

On Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, when I was not quite 11 years old, we were at my grandmother's house and I was asked to set the table for the upcoming feast.

Grandmomma pointed out where the silverware drawer was in a huge old sideboard in the dining room of her grand old Atlanta house.

In that drawer, beneath the silverware, I found a [?].

It seemed incredibly ancient to my childhood imagination. I also found a 1948 Franklin half dollar that had been shot with a bullet, and a 1943 steel cent. Grandmomma let me keep the steelie but not the Franklin half- the latter had been a souvenir of some uncle's marksmanship and had apparently been shot in midair, Annie Oakley-style.

She also let me keep the [?], of course, and that is the coin which launched my numismatic adventure. I still have it today, though it is one of only two pieces remaining from my childhood collection.

All you have to do to win the contest is guess what coin I found that Thanksgiving.

It was an old United States coin.

What was the date, type, and denomination of the coin I found?

(Just post your guess here in this thread.)

Hint: about as many years have elapsed between the year it was minted and the year I found it as have passed from the year I found it until now, so that puts you pretty close to figuring out the date on it, at least. You'll still need to guess the type.

The answer is out there in cyberspace; maybe even on these very forums (I forget), so if more than one person stumbles across the right answer, we will have a random tiebreaker drawing in the event of multiple correct guesses.

Contest ends at midnight Eastern US time on Thursday, November 24, 2016.

Prizes: the winner will get a choice of one of the following options:

    • A USA 1-oz. Silver Eagle coin, Brilliant Uncirculated
(Dates available to choose are 2011 or 2015)

    OR...

    • About $25+ retail value in World coins; (1-8 pcs., may or may not include silver)
(Specify circulated old ones or BU/Proof moderns, and country preferences- I'll try to please)

PS- I will add that Grandmomma, the house, the woods we used to play in behind it, and I understand the whole neighborhood are gone now; the latter swallowed by modern development. But I still fondly remember those times and have the coin as a keepsake. It isn't worth very much monetarily, but sentimentally, it's priceless.

And oh, man, Grandmomma made the best biscuits ever, anywhere! The Cracker Barrel restaurant chain comes close with their biscuits... almost... but not quite.

People often ask, "what was the best meal you ever ate?"

I have little difficulty answering that question.
