spotted it in the pennies when we closed up at work PLUS...was an old mauve US coin roll in the safe, so I bought it. Just examined it and it contains canadian cents from 41 to 63 AND....... WHEATIES! 1941, 1942, 1945, 1946 (2), 1948 (2), 1953D, 1955D..woohooo oh...the coin roller..says on it AbbottCoinCounter New York USA..funny part is, it says PENNIES on it
Cindy, that coin is the tombac 5c.,which in introduced to replace the nickel 5c.,as nickel was a much sought after metal during World War II.The tombac 5c. coin is very common in the bottom grades.Trying to find ones with lustre is a different story altogether. Yes,I have both types of the 1942 5c. coins. Aidan.
I think its still in pretty good shape though Aidan. Should have heard me screaming in the office TOMBAC! My supervisor thinks Im nuts and I think she getting irritated with me talking and searching coin..lol yeah I also have the 43 V tombac
There are some varieties in the 5c. coins of the late 1940's & early 1950's that are worth looking out for.The 1951 & 1952 'Beaver' 5c. coins has 2 main obverse types - High Relief & Low Relief. The 1953 has 2 obverse types - With Shoulder Strap & Without Shoulder Strap. You really have to have a linentester magnifying glass to really look at the details, especially the relationship between the lettering & the rim denticles. Aidan.
Cindy,I think there are also some subtypes of the 1950 5c. coin. When you look at Charlton, you could see what I mean. I've even got the 1951 nickel commemorative 5c. coin as well. Aidan.
hey I only paid 1 cent for the tombac..seeing as how it was in with them..lol As for the '44...would probably suffer a coronary on the spot..lmao
thanks DJ I had gone through 5 rolls of quarters during my lunch and found nada..was disappointing...so the wheaties and tombac more than made up for it
Cindy, you should invite her over one day & try & educate her about coins.Who knows, she may learn something new,& that you can find something good in your change.I bet you she was laughing when you pulled that rare Twoonie out of the drawer. Aidan.
Aidan, aprox 8000 1944 5 cent pieces were struck in Tombac and are very rare, hence the cardiac arrest!! They are a bit like the 1943 bronze US wheat cent and the 1944 steel wheat.
John, there is no mention of a 1944 tombac 5c. coin in my 1981 Krause. If it is listed in a later edition of the 20th. Century Krause, then what is it priced at? Aidan.
