I’ve got a thing for capricorn coinage, having been born under that astrological sign, so… https://www.biddr.com/auctions/navillenumismatics/browse?a=3401&l=3893838
LM, I don't collect ancients, except for some Ptolemaic. But I look at your two ancients pictured and think to myself: These are two beautiful coins.
absolutely beautiful... about the only reason I don't collect ancients is I can't afford even some of the cheapest of the nice ones and I not fond of collecting slugs
Nice coin, LM. We have two CoinTalk threads about Augustus Cistophoric Tetradrachms! Here's the other thread about one which appeared in a movie: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/st...n-which-appeared-on-television-program.404343
Saw that! Wish I had that one with the sphinx, but the capricorn is special to me, for reasons mentioned above. (I don't set any store by astrology, but I've gotta be loyal to my star sign, y'know...)
@lordmarcovan awesome addition to your collection, congrats according to RPC 2213, RIC² 477 = 480, so it seems that both RIC numbers refer to the same cistophoric tet: Sutherland group V–VIα, RIC 477, 480 https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/1/2213
Very nice! I actually got another in the same auction (just two lots earlier), though of a slightly less interesting type:
I dunno, that’s a pretty darn cool looking reverse! Equally interesting, I’d say. I like the continuous chain of lettering going completely around the obverse, too.
Less interesting? I don't think so. All coins shown are more than interesting. Two of mine: MARCUS ANTONIUS Ionia Silver Cistophoric Tetradrachm OBVERSE: M ANTONIVS IMP COS DESIG ITER ET TERT, head of Antony right, wreathed in ivy, lituus below, all within wreath of ivy and grapes REVERSE: III VIR R P C, bust of Octavia right on cista flanked by snakes Ephesus 39 BC 11.8gm, 26mm RPC I 2201, Sydenham 1197, Sear 262 DOMITIAN AR Cistophoric Tetradrachm OBVERSE: IMP CAESAR DOMITIANVS AVG P M COS VIII, laureate head right of Domitian REVERSE: Legionary eagle (Aquila) between two standards; one surmounted by a banner, the other by a hand Struck at Rome for circulation in Asia, 82 AD 10.39 g 25.5mm RIC II 843; RSC 667, RPC 865; BMC 252
Fantastic addition, @lordmarcovan, congratulations! You will probably already know that the astrological sign of Augustus was the capricorn, so you have that in common with him
Coin is in hand now, and looks better than the photos. It’s off to NGC soon. I’ll try to remember to post their Photovision pics once those are done.
