Hey guys, I just sold off some coins so I can buy my first Trade Dollar. Needless to say this will be my first big (probably small for most of you ) purchase. I'm looking for one in the $200-$250 range. However my only problem is finding a nice one in that range. eBay Trade Dollars are outrageous, most are way too expensive for the grade. I know online coin dealers tend to have them at a more reasonable price in low grades, but most of the time they're damaged or cleaned. On top of that, there aren't many dealers with low grade Trades. I have checked virtually every known coin shop on a list and most have no Trades or only high end Trades. I have yet to call my local dealers to see what they have in stock. Could someone point me in the direction to look for lower end Trades? Thanks :hail:

Can I help you out with the market for these things or where to buy? No.

BUT, take a look at this site. It has quite a bit of info, and Bruce, tradedollarnut, is called by most, the Trade Dollar KING!

    You'll learn quite a bit. ;)

I like Trade Dollars, because of the design, and when they are graded, "T$" is put on the slab. :D

stealer just be patient and you will find exactly what you want. The biggest mistake people make in coin collecting is being in a rush to get it right now.

Over the years, being in a hurry will cost you a fortune. Patience will save you a fortune.

You should be aware that trade dollars were heavily counterfeited, so it would be wise to research them as much as possible.

Teletrade has a few going off in tonights auction and more in the next 3 auctions (mon/tue and wed). The tuesday auction has a nice xf45 and there is no buyers premium in the tues auction. All are slabbed so presumably genuine which would be my biggest concern with trade dollars.

Ok, I'll keep that in mind!

Chris, I have been reading each scrap of knowledge I can find about identifying fake trade dollars. If you have any you could share it would be great!

I have never bought one myself, but I'll tell you this: I'll never buy a raw Trade dollar, not even sight-seen. The Chinese forgers are getting too good. Diagnostics can be replicated in many cases. I would buy one graded by PCGS, NGC, or ANACS, and still double check the diagnostics anyway.

    Good luck!

As was mentioned earlier, tradedollarnut is the go-to guy for info.

I was bidding on a ANACS CC one with Chopmarks and it was at around $200(I was winning it) which was near redbook and then within the last min it shot to $478. I have no idea why it went for over twice redbook and it had chopmarks. So I haven't had much luck with them.

How about you look at budgoods site? he has trade dollars and he is doing 5% off any raw coin. Look in the classifieds for his offer

Yes I did consider budgood's lower end TD's. My only problem with them is that one of them has lots of dings and the other exhibits old cleaning. I know it sounds like I'm trying to live in a perfect world but I really want to get a non-damaged coin.

I have one that looks like original surfaces, but my others have been cleaned. Large silver coins before Morgans are just very hard to get not cleaned, since they have always been popular, and cleaning for decades was considered improving it.

It depends on what you want the coin for. Personally my best Trade $ is cleaned, but I like it the best since I see the most details. I know it makes it harder for resale, but I would choose a cleaned coin at higher grade than a lower grade uncleaned. By cleaned I mean dipped, not scrubbed of whizzed of course.

In my opinion better dipped than scrubbed.
