Local coin shop doesn't have any in stock, but he says he can get be a common date (like 1877-S) in "good" condition for around $80. There is a coin auction later this week, but all The trade dollars are XF or AU. Heritage says those go for at least $250 (waaaaaay out of my price range). I'd *like* an error-free VG, but not sure I can afford it. Should I settle for one that has been cleaned? They seem to go for $50-$100...
Save your money and buy the best example, in the condition that you can afford, that's agreeable to you. Don't make the mistake of buying something you think you can live with right now and then have buyers remorse two years down the road. Been there, done that.........
This is the best possible advice you can get. I made this mistake many times years ago and I am still trying to dump the majority of my collection and repurchase nice pieces. If you must get a low grade example, buy a nice problem free example. That said, I don't know what your financial situation is or how long it takes you to save $80. From my perspective...the difference between $80 and $250 isn't huge (right now the MAX I spend on my hobbies is around $250 and that's basically a 1-2 month budget for me). Now, if it takes you 6 months to save the $80...then saving $250 might not be realistic. If you are just dying for a Trade Dollar but don't want to save for 2 years, then go ahead but make sure you buy a completely problem free example.
Many are not real today. I got stuck with one, 1875 s. So, if you are to buy one have it weighted at the shop, check the surface, if any bump, or balls on it, dull looking before buying, then walk. Only buy, from one you know, or a true slabbed one.
Without seeing them, what would a good price be on both an 1877-S XF and and AU? Trying to search on Ha.com... Looks like $200+ easy...
