Hi all, I have a buch of coins to sell, would rather deal with a local coin buyer. I live in Hollywood and would like a reputable dealer...any recommendations? Thanks!
Good Hollywood Coin Dealer I have bought thousands of dollars from CollectorsInternet in Hollywood. They handle almost any American coin 1793-2005. I actually furnished most my Type Set with some quality gems from that site. They also buy a lot - estates, previously sold coins, etc. Good Luck. SMB www.collectorsinternet.com
Superior Galleries in Beverly Hills has a pretty good reputation. I've bid on a few items in their auctions, but never high enough , so I don't have any personal experience with them.
Try Robert Van Bebber at 228 South Brand Boulevard in Glendale. That should be pretty close to you. I do quite a bit of business with him. He's more foreign coin oriented, but he buys all coins and I've found him to be honest and pay fair prices.
Collectorsinternet has a wonderful website. I can not speak for their American coins but I had a different experience with them , then smb12312 ,with a French gold coin. They send me a different coin that I had ordered and that was after confirmation via e-mail. The coin that they sent me was to replace what I had ordered off their website. The coin that they sent me was worth less then what I had ordered. I did get my money back but it was not a smooth process and was time consumming. I would recommend that before you order from a website that you check out their status with the Better Business Burea.
Sorry to hear that. I talk to Willis (the owner) all the time and he runs one of the tightest ships in the business. I've received a wrong coin but I simply sent it back after emailing and did not have a problem I like the conservative grading. They'll send it off to a TPG and it returns higher you get it at the original (lower) price, if it grades lower they adjust accordingly. This happened to me for a 1796 quarter which sold VG10 but returned with a F12, a difference of thousands. I got the lower price without a problem.
I mentioned your post to one of the newer owners, Mark Thomas. He looked up your invoice and as far as he could tell, they sent you a more valuable gold coin for the same price, and strictly for your approval. He stated that at the time, their Foreign Coin Export had undergone surgery and they were doing their best to fill in for him, which might also explain the delay in your refund. Under postal regulations, merchants are allowed up to six weeks to refund money, and even longer for sick leave or other disasters. I'm sure if you try them again these days, you would have better experience, as I've been dealing with CollectorsInternet for many years, both buying and selling and always got fair prices both off. My type set I bought from them for $60,000 in 2001 was auction off by the Beverly Hills Coin Club for $184,587 in 2008, a three-fold increase and just in time, before the big stock market crash last October. The Coin Club has a free service for members, where a trustee will show your collection to their "top 10 buyers" and get the highest bids from their members. The club gets a 5% "finder's fee" from the highest bidders which goes to their youth programs, so they don't charge anything to the seller. It takes about 30 days to get all the bids in, but it's well worth it.
CollectorsInternet Not the biggest, but fair prices buying and selling As mentioned in another post, I've been dealing with CollectorsInternet in Hollywood for many years, both buying and selling and always got fair prices. They started as Hobby Investments way back in the 1970s and have undergone different owners/stockholders but all have been knowledgeable.
