I'm looking for estimated population data on Double Dies, specifically Lincoln Cent double dies. Has anybody accumulated info. like this, or do I have to rely on PCGS auction results. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

    Thanks.

Estimation of such usually is based on when it was discovered, and if any or most of the DD production was then destroyed by the mint before release. I would say it is mostly estimated by the number of known coins. Easier when only a handful or so, than when when there was 200,000 or so. The wider the spread, the higher the value, so I use the value the market puts on such a coin as a reflection of estimated #, but there is no accuracy usually for any AFAIK

My thoughts on the subject is in most cases doubled dies struck a normal number of coins. The amount of coinage they produced is about the same as any normal die. If you want to get a better idea of the population of a specific doubled die variety look to die state. Those varieties which have known examples exhibiting VLDS probably struck more coinage than varieties whose known examples do not exhibit die state greater than MDS.
