Hi all, I recently got the Standard Catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1900 by Russell Rulau. I'm new to this genre, but it seems like a very good book, several different types of tokens all in one book. I was wondering if there is a 1900-date edition (or something similar) as well. Does anyone know of any titles covering 20th Century tokens? Any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
That is a very good book, although it has some shortcomings. In the front of the book you will find a listing of types of tokens that are not covered in the book, which are substantial. Info on those types is often available in other books. The Civil War token section of the book is just a token (pardon the pun) section and far from being complete, as Rulau did not want the Civil War token section to dominate this already over 1000 page book. The cwt store cards only have the most common variety listed for each merchant, so is essentially useless for proper identification. Makes for some good deals on ebay though when people use this ref. for cwt ids. I have picked up some pretty scarce tokens cheap because they were identified as commons. Did you get the new 4th edition of the book? No, there is not a comprable catalog for newer tokens (I wish there was), as there are just too many types and varieties. I have over 70 token refs trying to cover my areas of interest, and I am not yet half way thru the list of books I want. Finding the book is sometimes harder than finding the tokens, as many of them are long out of print. If you let me know if you had any particular type of 20th century token in mind, I will be glad to help you out if I can.
