I use two-pocket flips to display one face of the coin and also keep ID and acquisition notes on an insert in the other pocket. I'm down to vinyl now and don't want to use those for long term storage. If you have experience with flips I could use some advice. Looking for archival flips that will fit in the pockets of 20 slot pvc-free pages. Prefer to buy in lots/boxes of 1000. Have used Mylar, but it is so brittle it often snaps when you try to remove and replace a coin after inspection. No experience with non-pvc "vinyl" which is stiff but claimed to be archival due to manufacture without softeners. Is it as archival as Mylar? Can anyone suggest a brand and/or source of supply?
I've been using Saflips for about 20 years with no complaints. I don't know if they come in 1K quantities, but you could always call a supplier and negotiate a deal. You mentioned that you plan on putting them in the 20-pocket pages. FWIW, I found that the flips have a tendency to fall out of the pages if you will be shifting them from slot-to-slot to accommodate new additions or simply taking them out for photos. What happens is that the pocket will stretch out of shape, making it easy for the flip to fall out. Think about it! Chris
I've switched from saflips to these; very happy so far: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1000-2x2-D...402&pg=2349624&_trksid=p2349624.c100891.m5206 (Hope that link works!) I haven't had any of those for more than about two years, so I really can't comment on how they hold up long term. IMO, they look better in the pages as they are more clear/blue, whereas saflips are more yellow in the page. Just personal preference.
Chris, I am making up type sets for my 19 Great Grandkids. Each set has 3 or 4 of those pages. They do have issues with flips falling out. And, they are intended to be in there for many years. I thought about using a small amount of clear glue to a corner of each pocket. Any thoughts? Dave
CAPS Albums can be used for Airtites and other capsules. They get expensive if you have a large quantity. I use them for some collections.
I have some older Saflips that were kept in vinyl pages (shudder) for several years. The flips turned so yellow they dimmed the view of the coin. Scrapped that. For real long term archival protection acid free paper envelopes in an acid free box/enclosure is probably the best, but not if you need ready access to the coins for study purposes. (i.e. typological study). Saflips in a non-PVC page is my compromise for ready-viewing storage of material I frequently study. Deep long term storage will get different treatment. I too have the experience of stretched pockets on coin pages; and worse. I use three ring binders to house the pages with coins, and these stand on a shelf. The load of coins causes stretching and tugging at the ring holes as well as crumpling at the bottom right of the pages when they are not completely filled. I have not found an adequate solution that gets all of the job done my way so far.
I have used mine standing up. I am considering laying them flat. But, they may take up more room and be harder to access. I have had some stored that way since the 60's. The coins were not affected but the pages were.
I used many options & I always go back to the 3 ring binder/pvc free pages & flips. I get so much more joy looking at them this way than any other way. I would still love to see paper envelopes with a window like a 2x2 cardboard. Only saw 1 posted on the PCGS forums & it was from the UK and some auction house in the 60s. No one has seen one like it since. Similar to the regular envelopes for Mail with an address window, but for coins. And stamp glassines don't work well either.
You mentioned you want to make up type sets for many grandkids, is why I mentioned the more expensive, but much safer to handle Airtites with album (Caps) for long term storage of coins. Excellent way to pass on the hobby. Kudos.
I am thinking about that. The sets have everything from IHC to Ike dollars. I think it would be difficult to put that mixture on pages together. It would also be expensive. Each set has about 75 coins.
This is probably not the thread to pursue this in. I don't want to hi-jack someone's thread. I posted my type set process on https://www.cointalk.com/threads/what-to-do-with-my-accumulation.341614/ if you are interested.
I started out using Saflips but they cracked easily. So I moved to acid free paper envelopes for longer term storage and Abafil trays for everyday purposes.
Those are nice. But, attached are pics of what I am doing. A few too many coins for something like that.
