I was looking around Craigslist yesterday and someone has posted a want ad for a 1975 Washington Quarter.

He is willing to pay $100 to $500 for one and he even has a pic of what he is looking for.

I read the thread last month about the woman in the post office whose family just gave away all of the old coins (in wheelbarrows!) and this reminded me of that.

    Here is the ad:

    -------------------

Tired of looking through my pocket change. If you can give me a 1975 quarter for my collection I have $100 finders fee for a circulated coin. If you have a 1975-S from the San Fransisco Mint I will give you $500 cash on the spot. Just let me know, Im in Norcal but will travel, I know some mint employee most likely has a stash of these coins. Being near SF you may have one in YOUR pocket change....

That's pretty funny. Maybe Daniel Carr or our Chinese friends can come up with some '75's for your Craigslist buddy!

All of the US quarters minted in 1975 and 1976 carried a special reverse and were double-dated 1776-1976. So there are no quarters that are dated 1975.

I recall that an original owner of the only five (unlawfully) minted 1913 V nickles ran ads offering to buy them in order to stimulate interest and create a market for his holdings.

I wonder if something similar is at play here, with this advertiser holding some Chinese counterfeit 1975 quarters.

Or maybe he's modified some genuine quarters, as was done to create mock 1964 Peace dollars.

I should have been clearer in my original post...

I should have said that there is a PRANKSTER on Craigslist. I think he's messing with unsuspecting people's minds. I'm sure he got hundreds (if not more) people out there looking through all of there change finding 73's, 74's and Bicentennials while hunting for the elusive '75!

I think it's the Jack-a-lope of numismatic humor.

That picture looks like a Photoshopped '57 Washington proof.

I remember someone telling his buddies that he will pay them $300 if they can find a '75 quarter, mainly to get them to stop making fun of him for collecting coins and to try and lure them into the hobby of finding coins in circulation.
