I am looking to purchase a 1883/2 shield nickel. Does anyone know of a reputable dealer that is selling one? I can't find anything at Ebay, Heritage or SGBH. Thanks. I am looking for a liquid investment instead of having cash lying around.
Are you looking for a particular variety of this coin ? There are 5 different ones and the value can vary. Also - any particular grade in mind ? eBay, Heritage & Teletrade have them available the most often - it just takes a little patience. But if you wish you might try contacting a major dealer like ANR and have them look for one for you.
I wouldn't advise buying a coin like that as a "liquid investment." In my view, a liquid investment is a coin that you can take into most coin shops and get a decent offer for it. Most dealers won't offer as much for a coin like that, because it will sit in inventory for so long. Charlie
Hi Scott That Is Good Sound Avice From Two Of Are Best Here At Coin Talk Doug And Charlie, Patience Is The Key Word Here.
Stacks just had an 1883/2 listed in their May auction. Take a look at the realized price to get an idea of what they are selling for...I think it went for $500 or $600.
If you really want an 1883/2 nickel you either need to know what the different varieties look like or only buy coins from the top services. A very large number of people sell 1882 heavy 2 coins as 1883/2 and I would suspect that you can probably find 1882 heavy 2 coins in third tier slabs as 1883/2 as well. This site should tell you what you need to know to identifiy the real thing. http://www.shieldnickels.net/1883_2/1883_2.html
