Been searching one of these for a number of years. Actually, I never thought I'd find one. This is the mint mark on a 1946 dime Last I heard there were only about a half dozen known - the PCGS page lists 3 graded. If anyone has more up-to-date info, please pass it along.
What is special about this particular dime? Edit: Just checked out my Cherry Picker's Guide. Sans Serif MM. It says this variety is considered extremely rare and a MS specimen sold for $750 in 2007. Excellent find!!! Can we see pics of both sides of the coin?
I can't do the whole coin (lousy camera), but I can take some pics through the microscope. Here's part of each side so you can get an idea as to condition. I tend to go with VG, but if I squint just right, I can get it up to a F.
Man, I just turned in a bunch of 1946-S dimes as part of a "junk silver" transaction at the last local coin show. I wonder how rare this variety really is, and how much it's just that hardly anybody is looking for them. But if it's in Cherry Pickers, clearly there are some looking for them, and apparently there isn't a big stream of new finds. Good catch!
I have been checking every 46-S dime I could find for the past four years (and I spend a lot of time going through the junk silver bins). This is the first one I've found. From what I've seen of pictures of some of the others people have found, my bet is that there was only one die that got this mint mark. I would say it's more rare than the the 1943 dime and quarter with the trumpet tailed "S". I've found three of each of those.
I'm no coin collector by any means. I've inherited a bunch of US mint "stuff" I'm sorting through to edgumicate myself. Mr. quarter-back's picture learned me the reverse of a silver dime's torch, when worn, looks phallic. The torch on the reverse of the dime, not the reverse of the torch. That's just stupid :/
I have a question regarding this 1946 Roosevelt Dime with the funny "S". Is the 1947 the same issue as the 1946 S ?? Because I have a 1947 S that looks like this 1946 S Roosevelt Dime.
The same mint mark was used on 1947 dimes, but is pretty common for that year. It's only when it shows up on the 1946 that it gets fun. FWIW, the sans serif mint mark was used in '46, and '47 for cents, '46 and '48 on nickels (found a nice '48 over the weekend), and '46 and '47 on dimes. I been checking every '46, '47, and '48 quarter I can find, but as far as I know, it was not used on quarters - at least not intentionally.
