...or actually, my mailman on Halloween! I was able to add two new Severus coins this week. Both denarii. Not that I buy anything else of his unless I see a nice provincial that is cheap. I see the medallions and sestertii of his and I am always tempted but they are so much more expensive that I can not see really making much headway if one or the other became the focus of my collection. So, more denarii it is. Our first present to myself today is another example of a reverse type I already had: ANNONAE AVGG. Issued in 197 - 198AD, this coin was issued during Septimius' co-rule with Caracalla. I added this example to my collection because not only is it a pretty solid example, it also is from IMP X. My existing ANNONAE AVGG example is from IMP XI. Septimius Severus, Denarius, ANNONAE AVGG AR Denarius Septimius Severus Augustus: 193 - 211AD Issued: 197 - 198AD 19.0mm 3.10gr 6h O: L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP X; Laureate head, right. R: ANNONAE AVGG; Annona standing left, foot on galley prow, holding corn ears and cornucopia. Rome Mint RIC IVa 107; RSC 37. Aorta: 673: B3, O59, R21, T8, M4. Our second coin out of the Halloween grab bag today is a fine example from 205AD. This is my second example of PM TR P XIII COS III PP. My first is paired with Roma holding Victory. This coin pictures Jupiter holding a scepter and thunderbolt. This popped up as a price reduction from a want list of mine. A very happy email notification that was. Septimius Severus, Denarius, PM TR P XIII COS III PP AR Denarius Septimius Severus Augustus: 193 - 211AD Issued: 205AD 20.0mm 3.41gr O: SEVERVS PIVS AVG; Laureate head, right. R: PM TR P XIII COS III PP; Jupiter standing left, holding thunderbolt and scepter, eagle at his feet to left. Rome Mint RIC 196; RSC 469; Sear 6336; BMC 471. Aorta: 798: B3, O81, R250, T100, M4. Comments and proofreading for attributions are always welcome from you fine folks! http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=6295 As a thread starter, how about posting any coin couples? Same reverse legend, different design, co-rulers on coins, emperor/empress, etc. Also any Severans are great too!
Too many are from Syria: Same reverse legend, different design by Septimius Severus FELICITAS TEMPOR How about same design, different legend? AETERNITAS SAECVL FELICIT Same reverse die by different rulers Septimius Domna Original by Pescennius Niger Copied by Septimius Severus ...who soon decided it was inappropriate to issue a coin with Niger's title IVST so he changed it to SEVER (sorry for the trio instead of the requested couple) There must be hundreds of pairings from the Severans.
Hey, that those cool SS denari are way better than candy! I'll post my favorite SS coin. I don't have a matching coin to go with this, but I think at least two CT members have obverse die matches with this coin!
@Ajax @dougsmit and @chrsmat71 All of these are great coins! Ajax I think that is one of the best trophy and two captive reverses I have seen. Doug, nice selection of matches there! I appreciate seeing the die matches and changes from issuer to issuer. I particularly enjoyed the transitions from IVST to SEVER and the die match on the FELICITAS TEMPOR. The crazy tail makes it a die match I can spot right away for once!
My very first Roman coin, an AE as of Severus Alexander purchased in the UK in 1985... ... FINALLY found its mate in this Orbiana AE as a couple of months ago: A cute couple, no? (If a bit corroded, but aren't we all?)
A plethora of unbelievably precise historical details; the past isn't as distant and inaccessible as one might ordinarily be given to believe after all, is it?
I was about to ask what neighborhood you're in because I was going to send my son around...Dad needs a new coin! Nice addition!
Sweet pair! I too got two (very different) coins in the mail on Halloween. I shall have to post them.
By the way and just as a footnote, I really wouldn't recommend posting any internet ads for German consumption regarding your "favorite SS coin", if you get my drift.
