I feel very fortunate to get this cion. I didn't cheat a sole out of it. In fact I bid 3 times the high bid on it and no one else bid. The high bid was $10.
Not eBay and it was very easy to tell from the pictures provided. These photos are actual copies of the seller's. I mentioned to him when I paid, that the coin was worth more than that and his response was, "I know, good score!"
My only question would be: if he knew it was the overdate why wouldn't he mention it in the listing?? Nice score BTW I've been on the hunt for one of these for a while.... I am hoping to score mine for a buck
It doesn't show an apparent cleaning. It was mentioned in the auction. Guess this is just one of those times that the competition just wasn't looking or was occupied with something else. I have gotten 2 messages since I got it, from people who missed it and are interested in buying it. It's NFS.
The obverse looks to be damaged. I'm looking at the circle looking marks around the center of the coin.
I saw those marks beforehand and determined in my own mind that they didn't appear to be that significant to me. This overdate wasn't discovered until nearly 40 years after it's minting and to this date, there was or has been only one die that can be attributed to this coin. With the time elapsed between it's minting and discovery, most show obvious wear and circulation. In fact most experts believe that there are less than 15,000 surviving in any grade and many believe it could even be half that. Even with a little or a lot of damage, this coin is rare and I feel fortunate to have one in my collection, even if I did trade the price of lunch.
Yeah...I see that too. Of course, I've never turned down an unattributed overdate because of some damage--if the price is right.
I'll buy into that, have done the very same thing. Non-attribution doesn't meant the overdate is worthless, just under-appreciated at the time.
Nice score. I have three examples of the 42/3 overdate. Seems they have become my favorite nickel so I've been on the search for more.
