I'm not the kid, but I'm qualified to report for the one I took there. I saw no children on Thurs or Fri but when I walked in Saturday afternoon the place was hopping with ages 6 and up. There was scavenger hunt that at least 30 children took part in (based on how many I saw waiting to find out about their prizes). The Youth Activities Table was packed, there was a 'Deal, No Deal' type game for US and non US coins, plenty of state quarters, and free cardboard coin album pages for presidential dollars and state quarters. What I enjoyed about the presidential dollar display was the emphasis on the constitution and assorted trivia of the first four presidents. In fact the only thing I didn't like was that the prizes included SGS graded Washington quarters (yes, they were all MS-70). The kid for which I am reporting is too young to type but I can confirm that she made off like a bandit and we came home laden down with new additions to her collection. For variety I took her window shopping at some tables selling other collectibles such as fossils and ancient artifacts, the mammoth teeth and trilobites were big hits. I was encouraged that so many children were so excited and enjoying themselves, and hope that events like this one are helping to create plenty of new ardent hobbyists and history enthusiasts.
WOW. I sure wish the coin shows around here would do things like that. Nice show. Actually, great show.
i was there from 5-630 friday night, i couldnt come on saturday becaues of a cross country meet, anyway... i got some awesomee deals f 12 1883 NC V nickel, vf20 1910 barber dime, and a vg-8 type 1 1912 buff nick for 9 dollars (he was gonna charge me 10, then i stuck my hand into my pocket pulled out 9, and he decided to give it to me for that) i also bought a 1945 s nickel, it was graded ms 65 by the dealer, but i'd give it a 63, for 7 dollars. finally, a nice uncirculated ike for 2.50 dollars overall i think i did really well, and for the short amount of time i had there, I had a Blast!!!!
It's too late in the game for me to try to add this to "our" show in 2007 (about five weeks away now), but I will hopefully make a go of it for November 2008... Thanks for the report! I wonder if the folks who helped with CoinKids at the CNA Convention in Niagara Falls-- many of whom were actually from California!!!-- were involved in this as well. For everyone else, as far as I know the Mint is still making available freebies to promote the Presidential Dollars. Anyone in the USA should be able to get some and bring them to your local coin show.
Would you happen to be able to get another of those 1912 Buffalo Nickels? I could use a couple of those in my collection.
Man, sounds like a blast! I really have to get to a coin show near me. I think there might be one near me in January.
